Why Can't I Smell My Wax Melts? 7 Common Reasons & How to Fix Them
Share
There's nothing quite like popping your favourite wax melt into your burner, getting cosy and waiting for that gorgeous fragrance to fill your home. 🩷
But what happens when you suddenly can't smell your wax melts anymore?
Don't worry! It doesn't necessarily mean your wax melts have lost their fragrance. There are several reasons why you might not be getting the scent throw you're expecting, and most have a simple explanation.
At Precious Wax Sanctuary, we love helping our customers get the very best from their wax melts, so here are seven common reasons why your wax melts might not smell as strong as you'd like.
1. You Might Be Experiencing Nose Blindness 👃
Have you ever walked into someone's home and immediately noticed a beautiful fragrance, while the person living there can barely smell it?
That's often down to something called nose blindness, also known as olfactory adaptation.
When you're surrounded by the same fragrance for a while, your nose and brain gradually become less sensitive to it.
This means your wax melts could still be releasing a lovely fragrance, even though you're no longer noticing it as much.
Our tip: Try switching between different fragrance families. If you've been melting sweet bakery scents all week, swap to something fresh and clean or fruity for a change.
You might be surprised by how much more noticeable a different fragrance becomes!
2. Your Wax Burner Might Be Too Hot (or Not Hot Enough) 🔥
Did you know your choice of wax burner can make a difference to how your wax melts perform?
Different burners heat wax at different temperatures, which can affect how quickly fragrance is released.
A burner that becomes very hot may release fragrance more quickly, potentially shortening the time you enjoy it. On the other hand, a burner that doesn't get warm enough may struggle to release much fragrance at all.
Our tip: Always use a wax burner suitable for wax melts and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
If you're using an electric burner, remember that different designs and heat settings can produce different results.
For tealight burners, always use the correct tealights recommended for your burner and never use more than the manufacturer advises.
3. Your Room Might Be Too Large 🏡
We all love the idea of one little wax melt filling the entire house with fragrance, but room size and layout can make a big difference.
A small, cosy bedroom will often hold fragrance differently from a large, open-plan living room and kitchen.
High ceilings, open doors and airflow can all influence how noticeable a scent becomes.
Our tip: Try using your wax melts in a smaller room to see whether you notice a difference.
For larger spaces, you might prefer using more than one suitable burner in separate areas, provided each can be used safely.
4. You've Been Melting the Same Fragrance for Too Long 🌸
We all have those favourite fragrances that we could happily melt every single day!
However, using the same scent continuously can make it feel less noticeable over time.
This is closely linked to nose blindness. Your sense of smell becomes familiar with the fragrance, so it no longer stands out in quite the same way.
Our tip: Build yourself a little fragrance collection and rotate between different scent families.
Try alternating between:
- Fresh laundry fragrances
- Sweet bakery scents
- Fruity fragrances
- Floral perfumes
- Warm and cosy scents
Changing things up can make your wax melt routine even more enjoyable!
5. Your Wax Melt Has Already Released Most of Its Fragrance ⏳
One of the most common questions we hear is, "How do I know when my wax melt has finished?"
Unlike a candle, wax melts don't simply disappear as you use them.
The wax remains in your burner while the fragrance gradually evaporates into the air.
Eventually, you'll notice that the wax is still there, but the scent has become much weaker.
This is completely normal!
Our tip: When your wax melt is no longer releasing enough fragrance for you to enjoy, it's time to replace it.
Always allow your burner and wax to cool before removing it, and follow the burner's cleaning instructions.
6. Your Wax Melts Haven't Been Stored Properly 📦
Where you keep your wax melts can affect how well they retain their fragrance.
Exposure to excessive heat, direct sunlight and prolonged contact with air can gradually affect the fragrance oils within your wax melts.
Leaving wax melts unwrapped on a sunny windowsill, for example, isn't the best way to keep them smelling beautiful.
Our tip: Store your wax melts in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and keep them in their original packaging until you're ready to use them.
A drawer or cupboard is ideal!
Taking a little extra care when storing your wax melts can help preserve their gorgeous fragrance.
7. Some Fragrances Are Naturally Stronger Than Others 🌷
Not every fragrance is designed to smell the same strength.
Some scent profiles, such as rich gourmand fragrances, powerful florals and certain fresh laundry scents, can be particularly noticeable.
Others, including delicate florals, soft musks and subtle powdery fragrances, may create a much gentler aroma.
That doesn't necessarily mean one fragrance is better quality than another. Different fragrance ingredients have different characteristics, and scent strength can also be very personal.
Our tip: If you love a fragrance that really makes an impression, explore different scent families until you find the ones that suit your preferences.
And if you prefer something soft and subtle, there's nothing wrong with that either!
How Can I Make My Wax Melts Smell Stronger?
If you're struggling to smell your wax melts, here are a few simple things worth trying:
- Switch fragrances regularly to help reduce nose blindness.
- Check your burner is suitable for wax melts and being used correctly.
- Consider your room size and whether the fragrance is better suited to a smaller space.
- Replace old wax once the fragrance has faded.
- Store your wax melts properly away from heat and sunlight.
- Experiment with different scent families to discover your favourites.
Remember, adding extra fragrance oil to finished wax melts isn't a safe or recommended way to make them stronger.
